Today has been one huge day of walking as we walked over the Charles Bridge, up to Hradčany Castle and back again, then up to Pragues very own miniature version of the Eiffel Tower! This together with walking into what felt like every single jewellery store in town, and you start to get an understanding for how our legs and feet are feeling about now! A far cry from our tour in a Vintage car from 1927 yesterday that we hired to chauffer us around Pragues cobbled streets!
Speaking of jewellery stores, I have to share how weird the experience is in Prague to browse at wares within a shop. As soon as a shop is entered, sales staff surround the unsuspecting customer and start insisting, and occasionally demanding, that they must help you, and that this will only be achieved when pieces are tried on... Not sure if the idea of window shopping has been explained over here yet! Also, many shops sales staff actually stand out on the footpath and if you only so much as look at their external display window they start closing in and insisting you come and look inside. Very offputting at first, but with so much window shopping under our belts, we feel quite seasoned to it!
Babushka doll stores, and also Garnet and Amber jewellery stores make up the majority of shops around the tourist areas and you cant make it down a street without going past at least 5 of each!
The pollution here is really bad. A heavy haze hangs over the city, as you might have noticed from our pics... no our camera is not out of focus!! Apparently there are days in Winter when it is unsafe to venture outside and warnings are broadcast about high pollution levels.. Asthmatics would certainly struggle here.. from both the pollution AND the smoking EVERYWHERE! Locals have a very high incidence of respiratory ailments... Such a shame as this place is SO beautiful otherwise!
p.s We walked past Morgan Freemans room last night. The lights were on but we couldnt see him. We will keep you posted.
